Brodie Kostecki bounces back for provisional Race 16 pole
Top five split by less than a tenth of a second before Top Ten Shootout
Toyota struggle after dominant Saturday performance
Brodie Kostecki has claimed provisional pole for Race 16 of the 2026 Repco Supercars Championship at the Tyrepower Tasmania Super 440.
Kostecki rebounded from a tough day on Saturday to head a Boost Mobile Qualifying session dominated by Ford, setting the fastest time of the weekend to date on a 50.6983s.
However, the story of the session was the struggles experienced by the Toyota Supras that had dominated Saturday's running, with Chaz Mostert and Andre Heimgartner buried deep in the pack. There was also drama for Aaron Cameron and Anton De Pasquale, with a clash in Q2 being investigated after the Shootout.
Race 16 of the Repco Supercars Championship will commence at 2:45pm local time, with the top 10 on the grid to be decided by a Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout at 12:30pm AEST.
Q1
Overnight rain saw a wet circuit greet the early morning support categories, but a dry line had emerged by the time all 24 Supercars rolled out onto Symmons Plains.
The Penrite Fords were 1-2, Matt Payne leading Kai Allen after the first run, however five of the six drivers in the drop zone were heavy hitters.
Mostert, Thomas Randle, Ryan Wood, Broc Feeney, and Will Brown all needed to lift themselves out of the bottom six in the last run.
Feeney would have a big lock up on his first lap, however clean runs through his second and third laps would see him climb up to seventh at the end of the session.
Teammate Brown had a much closer shave, and was the last of the 18 cars to transfer through to Q2, with a tenth in hand over Jack Le Brocq in 19th.
Payne would stay at the top, diving into the 50-second bracket for the first time this weekend on a 50.9380s, a tenth clear of Anton De Pasquale.
Le Brocq would be joined by James Golding, Jobe Stewart, Declan Fraser, Macauley Jones, and Jackson Walls, who dived into the lane midway through his final run with an engine issue.
Q2
Minutes later, 10 minutes were put back on the clock for the top 18 to be whittled down to a Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout field.
Allen further asserted Penrite Racing's dominant speed with a 50.7905s on his first run, ahead of Dick Johnson Racing duo Kostecki and Rylan Gray.
There was drama at the exit of Turn 6 when Cameron tripped over De Pasquale as the DEWALT Camaro headed for pit lane, Cameron going for a lurid spin across the apex of Turn 7, but getting back up and running again.
David Reynolds, Wood, Mostert, and De Pasquale all needed to get themselves out of danger on the final run, with all 18 cars effectively line astern.
Wood and De Pasquale would jump out of the drop zone, however after finishing first and second in the opening race of the weekend, Mostert and Reynolds will start the finale from 18th and 14th respectively.
Race 15 winner Andre Heimgartner will join Mostert on the ninth row of the grid, only managing 17th in the #8 Toyota.
But at the head of the field, it was Kostecki leading the charge, with Payne, Feeney, surprise packet Jayden Ojeda, and Allen all within a tenth.
Brown, De Pasquale, Randle, Cameron, and Wood round out the field for the upcoming Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout at 12:30pm AEST.
