Matt Payne on track for Tasmania after training accident
Bathurst champion recovering after mountain bike accident
Payne sits third in points after double win weekend in Christchurch
Matt Payne is set to be fully fit ahead of next weekend’s Tasmania round following a training accident.
The Penrite Racing driver suffered a minor wrist injury while training in Victoria last week, and has been undergoing rehabilitation.
Sporting a bandage, the Bathurst champion featured on the latest episode on Drivers Only, which will be released in the lead-up to the Tyrepower Tasmania Super 440 on May 22-24.
"I ride all the time, like every day,” Payne said.
"I was going through this corner. Wasn't even that fast, and then sort of slipped the front, and then sort of put my hands out.
“It's just a bit sore, but it's not broken or anything like that. We're just getting it all ready to go."
Payne’s countryman Shane van Gisbergen infamously required surgery on a broken collarbone ahead of the 2021 Sandown round, and returned to race, charging from 17th to first in the opener in one of his most brilliant wins.
Penrite Racing heads to Tasmania in fine form, off the back of a breakout weekend in Christchurch.
Payne won the last two races at the ITM Christchurch Super 440 last month to jump to third in the championship. Kai Allen, meanwhile, claimed his first win to move to fifth.
Payne led Allen in an historic maiden 1-2 finish for the team in the Christchurch finale.
Track action commences in Tasmania on Friday May 22.
