Kai Allen falters, Cam Waters blazes to Darwin pole
Waters in box seat to win Triple Crown with brilliant pole
Allen to start 12th, Matt Payne scores front row start
A qualifying slump for Kai Allen and supreme Shootout lap has put Cam Waters in the box seat to win the 2026 betr Darwin Triple Crown.
The Tickford Racing star nailed his Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout lap to secure a second pole in as many days. With Allen only 12th, Waters has a golden chance to turn a five-point deficit into a Triple Crown win.
Anton De Pasquale and Broc Feeney form an intriguing second row, with Supercars champions Chaz Mostert and Will Brown to launch from fifth and sixth.
The biggest applause was reserved for Todd Hazelwood, who after being announced as Brodie Kostecki's replacement just minutes before qualifying, starred to 13th. Such was Hazelwood's performance, that he out-qualified the sister car of Rylan Gray.
While Waters celebrated, Allen could only watch on, his Triple Crown hopes hinging on a comeback drive in Sunday's 200km race.
"Firstly, I just had a bit of a soft pedal, and wasn't very happy. Secondly, I just didn't have the speed," Allen said.
"I was really struggling out there for grip, and put a lot of messy laps together, but at the end there I felt like I executed a lap really well, I just ultimately didn't have the speed.
"We know we've got a fast race car, and we'll fight forward, but it's a bit unfortunate."
