Will Brown rolled ankle in freak pre-Bathurst 1000 injury
Brown's co-driver Scott Pye fastest in Thursday co-driver practice
Supercars action resumes on Friday with Practice 3 at 10:05am
An attempt to emulate NRL star Reece Walsh was behind Will Brown’s bizarre pre-Bathurst ankle injury.
The reigning Supercars champion is walking off a sore ankle at this weekend’s Repco Bathurst 1000.
Revealed in the lead-up to the event, Triple Eight boss Jamie Whincup revealed Brown and Broc Feeney were both nursing soreness.
While Feeney is getting over back stiffness, Brown had to wear a moon boot in recent days, including at an appearance at the Deniliquin Ute Muster .
When asked about the injury after Thursday practice, Brown quipped that he was trying to mirror the moves of Brisbane Broncos star Walsh, who was best on ground in last weekend’s NRL Grand Final.
“I was playing touch footy, actually. Thought I could play and obviously can’t, so I rolled my ankle,” the Triple Eight star laughed.
“Yeah, just put it in a boot for a week and do this race meeting and it’ll be all right. It’s my left foot, so it’s all good.
“My left foot step, I thought I was Reece Walsh for a second and I just wasn’t.”
The day ended far better for co-driver Scott Pye, who was quickest in the rain-affected Practice 2.
It was a big turnaround from the corresponding session from 2024, when Pye crunched the wall at The Cutting.
“We rolled out of the lane and it was fast immediately,” Pye said.
“This place bites, and especially with the conditions they were. It was dry down the bottom.
“Coming out of ‘the tree’ [at Reid Park] one lap, just a sheet of water came down the window and going into the [metal] grate on slicks, it’s an uneasy feeling.
“In the race, you obviously don’t have the luxury of bailing out, but today it’s definitely to err on the side of caution.”
Supercars action resumes on Friday morning with Practice 3 at 10:05am AEDT, followed by Practice 4 at 1:05pm. Friday's action concludes with the all-important Boost Mobile Qualifying at 4:10pm, which sets the running order for Saturday's Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout.
