Broc Feeney flies to 15th pole, Matt Payne stung by costly kerb strike
Hometown hero Feeney one pole behind Scott McLaughlin's season record
Payne to start ninth after triggering kerb loop at Beach Chicane
Hometown hero Broc Feeney has drawn within one of Scott McLaughlin's season pole record with a brilliant performance at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.
The Red Bull Ampol Chevrolet driver was superb in a Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout headlined by a costly kerb strike for closest rival Matt Payne.
Payne will start from ninth ahead of Richie Stanaway, who cut the front chicane. At the other end of the scale, Thomas Randle gave himself the best possible chance to progress with a solid lap to end up second.
As clouds closed in over Surfers Paradise, Kai Allen kicked off the Shootout with a 1:10.4428s, before the retiring James Courtney lit up each sector to record a 1:09.8883s.
Shootout debutant Aaron Cameron flew through Sector 1, before losing time across the chicane and running wide at the final corner to settle in behind his teammate.
Andre Heimgartner cranked his #8 R&J Batteries Chevrolet sideways through Turn 4, and collected a slide through the chicane. On roaded tyres, the Kiwi pulled time back in Sector 3, but fell 0.046s short of Courtney's time.
Compatriot Stanaway, meanwhile, threw his lap away at the first chance of asking with a lock-up at the front chicane. Randle, who starts Sunday's race 16 points below the cut-line, then lit up the time sheets to land a 1:09.3998s.
Feeney launched into the first two sectors to lay down a 1:09.1986s for the field to chase, with Payne first of the top three Fords to roll out.
Payne failed at the first attempt, triggering the kerb loop at Turn 8. In response, Chaz Mostert flew through the first sector, literally flew through the Beach Chicane, but lost time at the final corner to fall 0.229s short.
Provisional pole-sitter Cam Waters stood between Feeney and a 15th pole of the season, and the Monster Ford was only good enough for fourth, despite taking the aerial route through the Beach Chicane.
The Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 concludes with Race 29 at 2:10pm local/3:10pm AEDT.
