Young gun Cam Waters has sent a strong message to the V8 Supercars Dunlop Series field ahead of qualifying later this afternoon at the Clipsal 500.

The up-and-comer wrestled Paul Dumbrell at the top of the times for most of practice two - and in the closing stages of the session recorded a 1min22.098 - a second quicker than his rivals.

"He's definitely a star of the future," Prodrive stablemate Mark Winterbottom said, watching on from pit lane.

Veteran Dumbrell - who's team Eggleston Motorsport claimed he would have beaten Waters in P1 if not for kerb hopping penalties - was relegated to fourth, surpassed by Chris Pither and Taz Douglas.

Jac Le Brocq, Josh Kean, Paul Morris, Andrew Jones, Todd Hazelwood and Brett Hobson completed the top 10.

While Hobson sat third on the order at a time, an incident involving his Commodore and Aaron McGill at turn four saw his Commodore stranded on track, bringing out a red flag ultimately shortening the session. The Battery World Holden suffered rear end damage after going backward into the tyre bundle.

Rookie James Golding sustained some damage to the left side of his car, while Shae Davies was the highest placed first-timer at the Adelaide track.

The V8 Supercars Dunlop Series qualify this afternoon in two parts, beginning at 4.15pm local time, ahead of Race One on the streets of Adelaide tomorrow.
