DJR Team Penske managing director Ryan Story has thrown his support behind V8 Supercars Dunlop Series talent Todd Hazelwood, acknowledging the South Australian teen as a star of the future.

As a fellow South Australian, Story has backed the Matt Stone Racing pilot whojoined an elite list of drivers last year when he received the Mike Kable Young Gun Award in his debut season.

He currently sits sixth in the Dunlop Series standings and while he enjoys sponsorship from a number of market-leading companies - such as his major sponsor iSeek Communications - Hazelwood relies on his own fundraising efforts to top-up his budget to race in the second-tier V8 Supercars category.

Such fundraising efforts sees Hazelwood and his family cooking sausages at hardware stores across South Australia, and he will continue his crusade to raise funds by hosting the first 'Todd Hazelwood Fundraising Dinner' later this month.

And he's enlisted the support of Story as the exclusive guest speaker at the inaugural event.

"When the opportunity came up to support Todd by speaking at his fundraising event, I was delighted to help him out and take part," Story told v8supercars.com.au.

"He's a great young kid, so it's great to be able to support Todd and see young guys like that who work really hard receive the support and recognition he's deserving of.

"Putting my DJR Team Penske hat on, the Dunlop Series is certainly something we keep a close eye on. When I think about Scott Pye and the year he was in the running for the title in 2012 with Scott McLaughlin, Nick Percat and Chaz Mostert - that was world-class motor racing.

"It's a great category and there's a lot of talent there - it continues to be a space we keep a close eye on."

Hazelwood's fundraising dinner will be held on June 24 and hosted at Adelaide's Rezz Cafe.

With 170 tickets available and a popular motorsport TV presenter enlisted to be the surprise MC, Hazelwood hopes the evening will help fuel his dream of racing V8 Supercars. Click here for more information.

"Everyone is aware of how competitive the commercial space is; and we're not any different in having to generate unique ways to attract funding," Hazelwood told v8supercars.com.au.

"It's well documented that me and my family sell plenty of sausages, however that only pays for so many tyres! We brainstormed some ideas and felt a fundraising dinner was a great fit with our focus of drawing localised support.

"The people of Adelaide have been tremendous, and having Ryan Story return home for the night to support us is indicative of the broader community support; it's been amazing."
