Seton targets Super2 title with new team

Aaron Seton is targeting the 2023 Super2 title in the new Gomersall Motorsport’s first season.

Third-generation racer Seton will lead the new team’s charge in the second-tier series this year, and shook down his new car on Thursday.

Seton, 24, will race a #30 SS Signs-backed ZB Commodore alongside team owner Gomersall, who returns to Super3.

The son of two-time series champion Glenn, Aaron will race chassis 888A-050 — a car Jamie Whincup previously took to victory lane in Supercars.

Todd Hazelwood raced the car in last year’s main game season for Matt Stone Racing.

The new Gomersall Motorsport was born out of MSR, which has cast its focus on the first season of Gen3 in the main game.

Seton — who raced for MSR in 2021 and 2022 — forms part of one of the most intriguing Super2 grids in recent years.

Tickford Racing has expanded to two cars, while Walkinshaw Andretti United and Blanchard Racing Team haved joined Super2.

Brad Jones Racing and Erebus Motorsport — with Jack Perkins behind the wheel — will also take part.

Title-winning team Eggleston Motorsport has also expanded to four cars, with Super3 title contender Kai Allen making the leap to Super2.

It all comes ahead of a new era for Super2, with Gen2-era Ford Mustangs and Holden ZB Commodores eligible for competition.

Seton has already raced a ZB, having partnered MSR's Jack Le Brocq at last year's Repco Bathurst 1000.

Through it all, despite Gomersall Motorsport’s infancy, Seton believes his new team can make a title push.

“It’s exciting to see all the Super2 announcements,” Seton told Supercars.com.

“It’s going to be a strong field come Round 1 in Newcastle. I’m looking forward to seeing where we end up.

“The aim this year, definitely, is going for the championship. We’ve got all the right ingredients to go for the championship.

“We’re going to give it a red-hot crack — we definitely feel we have the team to do it.

“Last year was special doing Bathurst with Jack, and it’s the same kind of car we’re racing in Super2 this year.

“I have a bit of experience in this car, which is handy heading into this year.

“They’re all one-percenters that add up.”

Seton and Gomersall both shook down their new cars at Queensland Raceway on Thursday, complete with new liveries.

Gomersall Motorsport is set to return to Queensland Raceway next week for further testing.

More running will help fast-track Seton’s time with the new ZB aero package, having raced a VF Commodore in 2021 and 2022.

“Feeling great in the car, is was good to get out for the first run of the year,” Seton said.

“We want to get plenty of miles on the car — it’s a new aero package this year with the ZB and Mustang.

“There’s a lot to learn, but really excited to be part of Gomersall Motorsport.

“The reason I’m in Super2 now is because of Jason and Leo [Tobin], who got together to put the program into place at MSR.

“I’m grateful that the partnership is continuing into this year.”

The 2023 Supercars and Super2 seasons will commence in Newcastle on March 10-12.
