Matt Payne has stolen pole for the Dunlop Series opener with a last-gasp flyer.

Payne pinched pole from Tyler Everingham just before red flags flew for the stranded Matt McLean.

McLean beached his Eggleston Commodore at Turn 9 late on.

Payne managed to clock his definitive 1:10.182s seconds before the session was suspended.

The margin to Everingham was a mere 0.081s, with Zak Best 0.086s from pole.

The pole came a day after Payne steered Lee Holdsworth's Penrite Mustang in the co-driver session.

Matt Chahda, who will make his Bathurst debut in October, impressed to fourth ahead of Jack Perkins.

Perkins, who is racing a livery paying homage to father Larry, is making a cameo in preparation for Bathurst.

Dean Fiore, another cameo appearance, was sixth ahead of points leader Declan Fraser.

Cameron Hill trailed his teammate, with Thomas Maxwell and Jay Hanson rounding out the top 10.

The Super2 segment of qualifying was halted with six minutes remaining for the stricken Elly Morrow.

Morrow spun at Turn 2, and became stuck in the wet grass trying to return to the track.

Kai Allen took yet another Super3 pole and was good enough for 14th overall.

Allen was quicker than Super2 drivers Angelo Mouzouris, Nash Morris, Aaron Seton, Cameron Crick, Ryal Harris and Morrow.

Crick managed to qualify after his car underwent repairs following a practice crash.

The 22-lap Race 1 will commence at 3:25pm local time.
