Payne pips Triple Eight duo in second Super2 practice

Matt Payne topped a red-flag-ridden second Dunlop Series practice at Sydney Motorsport Park.

The Grove Motorsport teenager led Triple Eight teammates Declan Fraser and Cameron Hill in the shortened session.

The session was called early following an incident between Steven Page and Nash Morris at the penultimate corner.

Earlier, Zak Best bogged his Tickford Falcon after an off at the final corner.

At the time of his incident, Best was quickest of all on a 1:43.388s.

With five minutes remaining, Fraser led Hill in a Triple Eight quinella, Fraser on a 1:42.891s.

However, Kiwi teen Payne's 1:42.789s prior to the final stoppage proved the fastest.

It would remain the benchmark, with the stranded Morris and Page cars forcing an early end to proceedings.

Best wound up fifth overall behind Image Racing rookie Jay Hanson, who was 0.3s from top spot.

Matt McLean, who paced the earlier Practice 1, ended the second session 2.1s from Payne's flyer.
