Mouzouris luckless in 'tough' Townsville weekend

Angelo Mouzouris has already cast his gaze to this weekend’s WD-40 Townsville SuperSprint after a horrid second round.

While Triple Eight Race Engineering teammate Broc Feeney won both races to regain the Dunlop Super2 Series lead, Mouzouris endured a tough weekend.

He was seventh and eighth in Friday’s practice sessions, and finished 13th on Saturday after electrical gremlins ruined his charge.

It got even worse on Sunday, with Mouzouris taken out by Aaron Seton on the second lap of the race.

The dramatic incident saw Seton out on the spot, with the Matt Stone Racing driver later docked 25 points.

Mouzouris managed to return to pit lane, but terminal damage forced his retirement.

"Looking at the positives from the weekend, we managed to get some laps around the streets of Townsville, but other than that, there wasn’t many other positives,” he said.

"Unfortunately, I got pretty unlucky this weekend. Luckily, we have another weekend ahead of us here in Townsville, so that should be good.

"The racing was fun, even though I didn’t get to race much.

"I had electronic dramas in Race 1, and only did one lap today in Race 2, but we got good tyre degradation, so hopefully next weekend we go okay.”

Mouzouris began season 2021 with pole in Bathurst, but was unable to convert to victory, Feeney winning the intra-team battle.

Hi car shut off after a promising start, but the mechanical drama left him without didn’t have a cool suit or helmet air.

Qualifying 10th for Sunday’s race left him vulnerable, and it unfolded once Seton made his fatal error.

“In Race 1, I made up a couple of positions after a poor qualifying and managed to get up to fourth," Mouzouris said.

"I plucked a gear and the car then shut off. It’s unfortunate, but we were able to keep going and finish just outside the top 10.

"Today, I again didn’t have a great qualifying and started P10. I got up to about eighth and then got taken out at turn two with no fault of my own.

"It was one of those racing incidents where I couldn’t have done anything. Let’s hope we go better next week.”

Mouzouris heads to this weekend’s WD-40 Townsville SuperSprint ninth in the standings, 252 points down on Feeney.
