AGAINST the strongest DunlopV8 Supercar series field seen in years, Chaz Mostert has dominated qualifyingat the Clipsal 500 by taking the ARMOR ALL pole position by four-tenths of asecond in his #99 MW Motorsport Falcon.
Mostert’s 1m21.8474s lap was0.43s faster than Ash Walsh – with second back to sixteenth-placed Garry Jacobsencovered by just one second in an impressively tight field.
Mostert, however, was on topfor much of the session and re-emphasised his dominance at the end of thesession by setting his quickest lap on his thirteenth, and final, lap of the30-minute session. He pocketed $1000 from pole award sponsor ARMOR ALL for hisefforts in the Sherrin Rental’s Ford.
Behind the two front-rowFords, Dale Wood – who topped practice yesterday - was third, Kristian Lindbomfourth and Drew Russell an impressive fifth in his recently acquired ex-TripleEight / Dick Johnson Racing FG Falcon.
Lindbom’s fourth place wasimpressive given he spent a time parked in the tyre bundles at turn eleven, mid-waythrough the session.
Russell’s NovocastrianMotorsport entry was used by Steven Johnson in last year’s V8 Supercarchampionship and is the sister car to the 2010-title winner driven by JamesCourtney.
Cameron Waters was first ofthe Holden’s, in sixth, with George Miedecke, Andrew Jones, Aaren Russel andDaniel Gaunt completing the top-10.
Casey Stoner was 12thin the Red Bull Racing Australia #27 entry, exactly one-second off the ultimatepace.
A thirty-car field qualifiedtoday, with just 1.6 seconds covering the fastest 20 cars.
The opening Dunlop V8Supercar race of the season will be contested this evening over 24-laps,scheduled to commence at 17:35pm local time.
