Matt McLean says his Super2 car is a "rocketship" despite recording mixed results in Friday practice.

The Eggleston Motorsport driver clocked the fastest time in opening Super2 practice at a wet Sydney Motorsport Park.

Passing showers made for tricky conditions at the Eastern Creek circuit, with red flags punctuating both sessions.

The second red-flagged practice session saw McLean end the session 2.1s off the pace of fast Kiwi Matt Payne.

Despite the shakeup, the 25-year-old remained confident in his Super2 car.

“We were making some changes in that second run, because we had not run on the wet tyres,” McLean told Supercars.com.

“The pace is actually extremely good; we were on a flying lap that was extremely fast.

“We would have run out of time to do one more change in the session, as we were pretty much going out and doing half a lap and then coming into changes.

“I don't think I completed even two laps in the second session.

“We learned all we wanted to learn, and the car is a rocketship.”

Cars will return to the track for ARMOR ALL Qualifying on Saturday at 2:00pm AEDT. CLICK HERE to view the race schedule.
