Fraser powers to pole with Super2 lap record

Super2 points leader Declan Fraser has powered to Race 1 pole position with a new practice/qualifying lap record.

Fraser and Matt Payne both set times better than Thomas Randle’s 2020 benchmark on Friday morning.

It was an impressive performance from both drivers considering Friday morning’s heat.

Four of the top five in the points filled positions one through four.

Fraser and Payne were split by just 0.02s, the former winning pole with a 1:20.376s.

Payne was just behind with a 1:20.400s, which was set as the chequered flag flew.

Zak Best was third, some 0.28s behind, with Cameron Hill fourth.

Fraser set the early pace with a 1:21.008s after the session began in drama at Turn 9.

Matt Chahda was forced to take evasive action after getting too close for comfort with Angelo Mouzouris.

Payne was first into the 1:20s with a 1:20.963s ahead of the final runs.

Fraser loomed as the benchmark when he clocked a 1:20.376s, which undercut Randle's two-year-old record.

Randle, the eventual 2020 champion, took pole in 2020 with a 1:20.435s.

Come 2022, and much of the Adelaide Parklands Circuit has been resurfaced, from Turn 9 to Turn 7.

Fraser's car 'absolutely on rails' on record laps

Fraser went on with it and went just 0.04s slower than his personal best.

At the death, Payne — who is third in the points — jumped to second.

Best is 75 point behind Fraser, with Payne and Hill 132 and 165 points behind respectively.

Tyler Everingham, who is the fifth driver in contention, was only good enough for seventh.

Jaylyn Robotham and Chahda were fifth and sixth, with Thomas Maxwell, Mouzouris and Cameron Crick rounding out the top 10.

Earlier, Kai Allen took another Super3 pole ahead of title rival Brad Vaughan.

Dunlop Series qualifying for Race 2 will commence at 4:40pm local time.

The first race of the weekend will start at 1:55pm local time on Saturday, with Race 2 starting at 1:25pm on Sunday.
