Erebus Academy has secured a Super2 debut for rising star Jay Hanson.

The teenager will make his Dunlop Super2 Series debut for Image Racing in Sydney next month.

Hanson adds a Super2 campaign to his busy schedule, with the teen already competing in the TCR Australia series.

The 18-year-old took his first victory in the TCR category on Sunday at Symmons Plains.

Hanson has an impressive junior resume; he has won 12 Victorian State championships and two Australian titles in karting, along with an impressive run in Formula Ford.

The Victorian-born racer is buoyed by the new challenge of stepping into the development category.

Supercars set to shine bright under lights

"The ultimate goal has always been to end up in a Supercar but obviously, we’ve been realistic,” Hanson said.

"This Super2 opportunity with Image Racing and the Erebus Academy is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and not something that I was going to miss."

Although having never driven a Supercar before, Hanson is confident that he will be able to make the most of the season.

"It’ll be a big learning curve for myself though I’ve learned a lot of the fundamentals through Formula Ford, like car control and heel and toe," he said.

"To have people like Barry Ryan, who have so much knowledge and experience in the sport, believing in me and believing that I’m prepared to take this step, it brings me a lot of confidence.

"There are so many people to lean on between Image and Erebus and I’m looking forward to gaining as much experience and knowledge as I can from the people around me.

"It’s going to be awesome to finally have my first go in a Supercar and I can’t wait to see what the year will bring."

Erebus CEO Ryan is looking forward to seeing the young driver maximise his opportunity with Image Racing and the Academy.

"Young Jay is a driver I’ve watched for years and years," Ryan said.

"His karting days were always exceptional and everything he’s done since then, he’s been really fast.

"He’s got the potential to be one of the best drivers in the category if his passion and mentality continue to match his driving.

"We know what he is capable of and we want to help bring out the best in him and see him show his talent."

Image Racing’s Terry Wyhoon shared similar thoughts: "Watching Jay has impressed me and he’s definitely got some talent so we are looking forward to working with him."

Hanson will get his first taste of a Supercar at the team's first test day at Winton Motor Raceway on February 21.
