Rewind: Murphy’s last Supercars campaign

October will mark Greg Murphy’s first main game start for exactly seven years when he lines up in a Boost Mobile-backed Erebus Motorsport wildcard.

The four-time Great Race winner will share the #51 wildcard entry alongside countryman Richie Stanaway at this year’s Repco Bathurst 1000.

It will mark four-time Bathurst winner Murphy’s first Great Race start since 2014, and Stanaway’s first since 2019.

Murphy’s sensational comeback comes seven years after retiring from racing.

It will mark his 23rd Bathurst 1000 start, having scored wins in 1996, 1999, 2003 and 2004.

The last time Murphy campaigned a main game event was the Gold Coast 600 in 2014, a fortnight after driving to 13th in Bathurst.

The New Zealander shared the #22 Holden Racing Team Commodore with 2010 series champion James Courtney.

After a shattering 2013 enduro campaign, which saw Murphy crash the #22 in the race, the duo returned in 2014 with a point to prove.

That they did, with Courtney and Murphy impressing to second in the Sandown 500.

On a day Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell took a commanding win, Courtney and Murphy combined to finish second from sixth.

A late Safety Car following a major crash for Lee Holdsworth Whincup’s near 12 second lead over Courtney wiped out ahead of a restart with 22 laps remaining.

It marked Murphy’s first podium since the 2011 Bathurst 1000, in which he started from pole.

It was a trying Bathurst weekend for HRT, with Courtney and Murphy the team’s only hope in the race following a heavy practice accident for Garth Tander’s co-driver Warren Luff.

Courtney and Murphy were only good enough for 13th in the Great Race, finishing a lap off the pace after starting 10th.

Murphy’s final main game event to date on the Surfers streets got off to a horrid start following a startline accident.
