Rain gives Reynolds hope after Bend charge

Wet weather could prove the tonic for David Reynolds to arrest a slide in form.

Reynolds was by far and away one of the best in wet last time out at The Bend.

The Penrite Racing driver raced into the top 10 in a handful of laps after starting last.

His charge ended due to a clash with James Golding, but Reynolds was nonetheless happy with his speed.

Teammate Lee Holdsworth, who will make his 500th start this weekend, raced from 12th to 10th in the race.

With rain forecast for Friday and Saturday at Sandown, Reynolds was confident of his chances.

It comes amid a challenging run of form for the 2017 Bathurst winner.

Reynolds scored six podiums in the first 14 races, but has an average finish of 11.3 since.

“Our cars are very fast in the wet,” Reynolds told the latest Penrite Preview.

“At Tailem Bend, I qualified stone motherless last, 27th.

“I got up to ninth pretty quickly, car went through the field. Will Davison was behind me, and he finished fourth.

“I reckon I could’ve been in the top five pretty easily if I didn’t careen out of control into the back of James Golding.

“If it’s raining, I’m all for it.”

Last March, Reynolds scored a memorable podium in his 350th race, which was held in heavy rain.

Reynolds also suggested the Dunlop Super Soft tyre’s Sandown debut will also play a key role.

Supercars will race on Dunlop’s softest compound at Sandown for the first time.

Drivers will race on the 2021 version of the Super Soft, rather than the tweaked 2022 version.

A batch of 2021-specification tyres was un-used, given last year’s Winton round was cancelled due to COVID-19.

“We’re on the Super Soft tyre this round, we haven’t run the Super Soft at this track,” Reynolds said.

“We’ve always been on the Soft or Hard tyre, so that’s going to be different.

“But the batch number is from 18 months ago… we don’t really know how they’ve been stored or whatnot."
