Drivers intrigued by live pit lane concept
Leading Supercars drivers David Reynolds and Anton De Pasquale are both intrigued by the prospect of a live pit lane being introduced.
It emerged this week that a live pit lane concept had been welcomed unanimously by teams at a recent Supercars Commission meeting.
The current pit lane order is allocated by the previous year’s teams’ championship standings.
For the entirety of 2023, Red Bull Ampol Racing will head pit lane, with its Chevrolet Camaros in the first two garages.
A live pit lane would see the order allocated by the teams’ championship standings after the previous round.
The opening rounds of 2023 have seen changes in the pecking order — notably, Erebus Motorsport leads both championships.
A number of teams have also encountered slow starts relative to 2022, with the Shell V-Power Racing Team ninth in the standings.
Penrite Racing driver Reynolds is in favour of the concept, saying he mooted in a podcast some years ago.
“I reckon it’s a top idea,” Reynolds told Supercars.com.
“Things like this are good, it creates a lot of debate.
"You’ll find it’s mixed at the start of the year, but it’ll level out as teams find their places.
“I’ve always thought it would be a good thing.”
Shell V-Power Racing Team driver De Pasquale agreed, and and reiterated Reynolds’ point that the order would settle as the season wears on.
“It could shake it up, it could be really exciting,” De Pasquale told Supercars.com.
“You could see something different every week, certainly for the first handful of rounds.
“You could have a team at either end of the lane, they have a good first round or bad first round, suddenly you’re in a different spot.
“From there, it usually settles into a groove.”
The 2023 Repco Supercars Championship will resume at the Bosch Power Tools Perth SuperSprint on April 28-30.
