While there are question marks over whether Fabian Coulthard will stay at Brad Jones Racing, his team-mate Dale Wood has made it clear he wants to re-sign with the giant-killing Holden team.

But he has also acknowledged until Coulthard's future is resolved he will have to wait in line to see if a deal can be sorted with BJR team owners Brad and Kim Jones.

Wood is in his second year at BJR, bringing commercial backing from GB Galvanizing, Wilson Security and Advam with him to secure the team's third Holden Commodore VF alongside Coulthard (Freightliner Racing) and veteran Jason Bright (Team BOC).

Wood has told Brad Jones he wants to stay with the team and there have been some preliminary conversations along that line.

But Jones, who has also been positive about Wood staying on, has told him the most pressing issue is to resolve the situation with Coulthard, who runs a strong third in the drivers' championship.

"The brief discussion I have had with Brad ... the key thing for him is locking down Fabs and what he is doing for next year," Wood confirmed to v8supercars.com.au.

"But where I sit in line behind that I don't know. He is working on other things and he's got people coming in and out of the truck all weekend and ringing him every day of the week.

"I am no doubt just one of many."

Wood said he wanted to not only be a strong commercial package for BJR but also improve his on-track results so the team would not have to debate whether to re-sign him or not.

"My ideal preference is to be here again next year," Wood told v8supercars.com.au. "My position is different I suppose. It's no secret that I have great supporters behind me that I have been lucky enough to build up over the years and they are very supportive of me.

"So hopefully that remains the same and then on a personal front I want to deliver results so I can effectively be the perfect package; a driver that can come to a team with some funding and have the ability to deliver results."

The 2013 Dunlop Series Champion finished 24th in his first full year in the main game in 2014. So far in 2015 he runs 20th, with a best qualifying position of fifth and race finish of eighth.

The 32-year old, who with wife Jess celebrated the arrival of his second son Sam (younger brother to Jackson) just before Townsville, says he has improved as a driver in 2015 although he knows there is more work to be done.

"We are more often than not running in that top half, being able to attack more than defend on the track," he said. "Last year I felt like I had to do a lot more defending than I did attacking.

"A lot of things about this year have been great. We have found more consistency where we are running up there, but there are a few key ones for me that drag it down. I'd say I haven't quite done the job that I expect of myself yet.

He admitted disappointment at his performance at the team's Winton test track this year and not making proper use of a car he felt he should have qualified in the ARMOR ALL top 10 on Sunday in Townsville. Instead he hit the wall and started 20th.

"You put those key things to your name; those top 10 shootouts and top 10 qualifyings," he said. "They are what we benchmark. I get particularly pissed when I am wholly and solely to blame."

After an abortive part season at Kelly Racing in 2009 and enduro drives with various other outfits, Wood says he now feels at home at BJR.

"I like the environment I have got with these guys. It is a good environment. They are good guys to work with with; Brighty, Fabs and the mechanics. Right across the board it is a good environment."

Wood is the envy of plenty of the paddock because of his substantial budget. He said he was sure his sponsors were being approached regularly but was confident they wouldn't be poached.

"It (poaching) has been going on for ever. You can be frustrated about it, but it's not going to change.

"I have the confidence in knowing the guys at GB Galvanizing, Advam and Wilson Security and that they support me so I don't have to worry about them too much, as long as I keep doing my bit for them and not becoming complacent."
