Will a Champ be crowned?

Riana previews Phillip Island - a place where we've seen Championships claimed, countless crashes and quick cars over the years.

Are we on the verge of history? Will we have our first ever six-time Champion come Saturday or Sunday afternoon? Or will the penultimate event in the Championship shake things up and force a show down at the NRMA Sydney 500?

As we have seen so many times over the years, Phillip Island knows how to put on a show.

It caused one of the most controversial ends to a Championship, which to this day is still debated, whether you are Team Lowndes or Team Kelly (Championship year 2006).Click here to watch the footage and read v8supercars.com.au's flashback written in 2013.

And it has produced spectacular crashes. At the time, you close your eyes and hope everyone's ok - but mostly the only consequence is the accident continuing to be played for years to come across highlights packages.

Straight away when I think of Phillip Island I imagine picturesque scenes overlooking the ocean, almost tranquil. Yet over the years the racing has been far from it - think Bargwanna 2002, the massive rollover for Andy Jones in '08, that moment for poor Cam McConville in '09 and then of course the unforgettable incident involving JC and Alex Premat last year.

It's amazing how this season has played out, when you think all the way back to the Clipsal 500 in March.

Lowndes opened his Championship account early and led out the gate, while Whincup dropped to as low as seventh [after Clipsal].

Questions were being asked about whether he could crawl back and the Ford faithful saw 2014 as the year of the blue! But Whincup is a five-time Champion and after eight events slowly moving his way up he took two victories at Queensland Raceway and with them the Championship lead.

So far this year Whincup has 11 victories, eight ARMOR ALL Pole Positions, 17 podiums and has finished every single one of the 32 races.

In his career he has 154 round starts, 86 wins, 59 Pole Positions, 131 podiums and five Championships. The guy is 31 years old.

If he extends his championship margin from 402 to 450 as early as Saturday afternoon he will become a history making six-time Champion - some would argue the best of all-time.

Regardless of what colour flag you wave, if you love our sport I am sure you can recognise that this is truly a sensational achievement regardless of what happens in the remainder of season 2014.

As much as the focus will be on Whincup this weekend, there will be a bloke in blue doing everything in his power to stop him.

It has been a whole 12 months since Frosty scored Ford's last pole position at the Phillip Island circuit and he will need to find that form if he is to throw one last punch in this title fight. After an overall disappointing Pirtek Enduro Cup, Lowndes will also be pushing to get back into form and finish the year on a high. He loves this track and holds an equal record of nine race wins with Mark Skaife here, so will be looking to get back those points that went begging over the last few races.

We go back to single drivers, in what is the final SuperSprint format for the season - two 100km races Saturday and a 200km race on Sunday all on hard tyres.

Phillip Island is known for its fast flowing nature but last year through up new challenges to the teams after the track's resurfacing - the high grip, high load characteristics posed similar issues as to what we saw at Bathurst this year.

I think that heading to the circuit this year teams will be better prepared. Braking is extremely important and the right rear tyre always needs looking after - we have seen many occasions where races have ended in tears after delaminating right rear tyres have seen stuffed penguins go to the hands of another driver.

Weather and wind also play huge factors when we talk about Phillip Island. Wind in particular can make a massive difference to the drivers' braking markers depending on the direction especially if they are getting a strong tail or headwind down the front straight.

I can't believe it's nearly season over for another year -but there is still so much to unfold. We still have 600 points up for grabs, one of the most beautiful circuits in Australia to race at, and to see whether Jamie Whincup will make history.

What we do know is that you certainly don't want to miss out on watching!

Riana's Wrap

Look out for:

- BJR -front row here last year, speedy at Bathurst, will want reward from little result across the Pirtek Enduro Cup.

- Frosty fight-back. Ford hasn't gone a season without a pole position since 1986 - he will feel the pressure to deliver here after Chaz has taken the limelight recently.

- JC redemption. Crash in 2013, nightmare Bathurst and GC, and Courtney hasn't had results at this circuit. He will be looking to change that.

- Whincup will become a six-time Champ.
