David Reynolds says he will only bring back the shoey celebration once he returns to victory lane.

Reynolds has been a constant on the podium in 2022, and is fifth overall.

The Penrite Racing driver has scored six trophies at three different circuits.

However, while champagne has been somewhat easier to get, Reynolds is hanging onto his iconic celebration.

“Shoeys can only be reserved for when you win,” Reynolds told Supercars.com.

“You don’t deserve to do a shoey when you’re second or third.

“Wins are always the goal, but they weren’t front of mind at the start of the year.

“Wins seemed unrealistic, but a couple of rounds in, we’ve got a fast car.

“We’ve got a moving goalpost, which has now moved to winning.”

It’s only fitting that the next round in Darwin was the site of two of Reynolds’ memorable celebrations.

Reynolds won the Sunday race in 2015 for Prodrive, which is now Tickford Racing.

On that day, the shoey nearly didn’t happen; a bout of ill health and an error while leading nearly cost him the win.

Three years later at Hidden Valley, Reynolds defeated Scott McLaughlin and enjoyed enother race boot cocktail.

It came after the Albury-born driver celebrated his famous Bathurst victory of the same ilk in 2017.

Such is Reynolds’ form in 2022 that, had things gone his way, he would be second in the championship.

Dave Reynolds' best ever one-liners

Reynolds explained his on-track efforts aren’t too dissimilar to previous seasons.

Rather, he cited the influence of Stephen and Brenton Grove as being integral to his sharpened focus and passion for racing.

That was evident in a broadcast interview at Winton, where Reynolds was irate over qualifying seventh.

Just three times in 2021 did Reynolds qualify seventh or better.

“Yes and no,” he replied when asked if he’s driving better than ever.

“I feel like I drive the same year in, year out. It’s whether I have the focus and the passion for it.

“The focus is always there I think, but the love and passion comes and goes.

Six podiums in 2022 so far

“It’s situational; the Groves have come in and they’re so passionate about racing.

“They’re so professional; they turn your attitude to align with them, which is perfect.

“It’s everything I needed; see at Winton, I qualified seventh and I was pissed off."
