There is no greater statement in a title bid than winning at the first round of the season.

Season-opening rounds since 1992 have been multi-race weekends.

The season-opener was a single-race weekend in all seasons between 1969 and 1991 except 1997.

Shane van Gisbergen will be looking to sweep a season-opener for a record fourth time when the 2022 Repco Supercars Championship starts in Sydney.

Skaife won 10 races at season-opening rounds

Reigning champion van Gisbergen swept the 2017 and 2018 Adelaide events, before winning both races in Bathurst last February.

Just 12 times in history has a driver swept a season-opener.

Van Gisbergen and Jamie Whincup did it three times each, with Mark Skaife and Marcos Ambrose twice each.

Allan Moffat and Scott McLaughlin achieved the feat in 1977 and 2019 respectively.

Lowndes and Ambrose celebrate in 2005

Whincup leads the way on season-opening wins with 13, ahead of Skaife (10) and Craig Lowndes (nine). Moffat and van Gisbergen have won seven each.

Just four drivers on the 2022 grid have previously won at the first round of a new season; van Gisbergen, James Courtney, Will Davison and Nick Percat.

The 2022 grid features 15 race winners, with 10 drivers yet to take the chequered flag first.

The 15 winners combine for 178 race victories, with reigning champion van Gisbergen representing 30 per cent of that haul.

Whincup won a record 13 races at season-openers

An impressive 13 per cent of van Gisbergen's career wins have come at season-opening rounds.

Will he add to his tally in under seven weeks' time?

The 13-event 2022 Repco Supercars Championship is scheduled to commence in Sydney in March.

Ticketing information for the Sydney event will be released soon.
