Bizarre red flag moment: Practice 2 highlights

Jamie Whincup was the only driver to break into the 1:05s bracket in Practice 2 at Hidden Valley Raceway.

Whincup, who has won seven races in Darwin, was 0.129s clear of Team 18's Scott Pye, who was fourth in the earlier session.

The seven-time champion set his 1:05.8799s late in the 30-minute session, which featured an early red flag.

Bryce Fullwood was forced to pull over on the pit straight after the bonnet came loose on his #2 Mobil 1 Middy's Electrical entry.

Whincup rates Super Soft tyre after Practice 2

Fullwood returned to the session and finished with the 18th quickest time.

Anton De Pasquale was third in the #11 Shell V-Power Racing Team Mustang, with teammate Will Davison improving to fifth after a lowly Practice 1 showing.

Practice 1 fast man Nick Percat was fourth, 0.182s down on Whincup, with Chaz Mostert, series leader Shane van Gisbergen and Mark Winterbottom the only other drivers within 0.3s of the #88 Red Bull Ampol Racing Commodore ZB.

The top eight drivers all dipped below Percat's 1:06.1695s time from the earlier session, with Kurt Kostecki the only driver over a second off Whincup's flyer.

Fullwood's unexpected bonnet dramas

Tim Slade led after the first flyers with a 1:06.6255s before Pye clocked a 1:06.6107s.

De Pasquale recovered from an off at Turn 5 to register a 1:06.4459s, before he was usurped by Mark Winterbottom’s 1:06.4268s.

Whincup hit the front with a 1:06.2144s, before De Pasquale went fastest again with a 1:06.0358s in the 17th minute.

Pye improved to second before lowering his own marker to a 1:06.0096s in the 29th minute, before Whincup dropped in his defining time just before the chequered flag flew.

"The session was good, the weather's predictable," Whincup said.

"It's hot, it's hot.

"Track stays consistent year on year, and because it's a Super Soft round, we've got plenty of practice tyres to use in practice to try and make the car go quicker."

The Repco Supercars Championship field will return to Hidden Valley Raceway on Saturday for Race 12 qualifying at 12:05pm AEST. Tickets are available here.
