Holden driver Jamie Whincup will start on pole for the first two races of this weekend's V8 Supercars event in Auckland after clocking the fastest time in qualifying on Saturday.

The defending series champion logged a lap time of 1min 2.76sec in the Top 10 shootout for pole position and will be joined on the front row of the grid by New Zealander Fabian Coulthard, who was 0.12sec slower than Whincup.

Ford driver Mark Winterbottom was third fastest and Holden's Jason Bright next best around the 2.91km Pukekohe circuit on the southern outskirts of Auckland.

On the third row will be Kiwi pair Scott McLaughlin and Shane van Gisbergen in a strong showing by the New Zealand contingent, who make up just four of the 27 drivers in the field.

Whincup leads this year's championship even though the Red Bull Racing pilot hasn't won any of the five races held so far in Adelaide and Tasmania.

The first of two 100km races on Saturday starts at 1.10pm local time (11.10am AEST).

There will be another two races over the same distance on Sunday.
