Whincup crashes in Practice at Bathurst

Jamie Whincup was left lamenting a practice accident despite showing strong wet pace.

Whincup led the rain-hit Practice 5 before crashing at Griffin’s Bend.

He managed to return the car to the garage, where it was repaired in time for Practice 6.

Practice 6 ran dry, but the #88 - which is being skippered by Broc Feeney - was only good enough for 16th.

It came a day after Whincup took over qualifying duties, but missed out on a Shootout berth.

The #88 will start from 14th, a grid position which has never produced a winner.

“I had a bingle today, unfortunately,” he said.

"I was pushing hard in the rain and unfortunately I just locked the wheel at the top of Mountain Straight and went into the fence.

"It’s obviously not ideal because it creates a bit of work for the team.

“There’s already a massive work load to get the car on track for tomorrow.”

Rain is forecast for Sunday’s race, but it is largely expected to feature bulk dry running.

Should that prove the case, Whincup is fearing the #88 may battle to keep pace.

Feeney was more confident in the dry, but the sister #97 entry has been faster overall.

However, Whincup is confident the rain could play into his chances.

“All in all the car was quite quick in the wet,” he said.

"Broc was reasonably happy in the dry conditions, but we have some work to do overnight to get the car more competitive to where we’d like it in the dry.

"We’re all going to take a guess on what the weather’s going to do tomorrow afternoon.

“Hopefully we guess right and fingers crossed we have a good car at the end of the day."
