'Not ideal': Whincup on disappointing qualifying

Jamie Whincup will be a "disappointed" spectator for Saturday's ARMOR ALL Top Ten Shootout at Mount Panorama.

Whincup narrowly missed out on a berth for the Repco Bathurst 1000 shootout.

The retiring Whincup’s best lap in the session proved just 0.02s short of a shootout berth.

The Red Bull Ampol Racing veteran was more than 0.6s off the pace of provisional pole-sitter Will Brown.

Prior to qualifying, Whincup had had mixed results throughout the opening practice sessions, recording 11th and and 20th.

In contrast, teammate Shane van Gisbergen will be the third car to run in Saturday’s shootout, recording a 2:04.227s.

It means Whincup missed the Top Ten Shootout in his final round as a full-time driver.

Speaking after qualifying, Whincup said his lack of green tyre runs in practice was a defining factor.

"Plenty of excuses," Whincup said of his qualifying outcome.

"We didn’t get green runs in practice before, they’re good opportunity to get up to speed, look at the data, and then work from there. That ultimately hurt us.

"The car was probably good enough, but once you start picking up that pace and getting right into the ‘fours’ the tracks almost completely different.

"Disappointed with that, but what can you do? Put your head down and try to make it up in the race.

"It won’t change our approach [to the race at all].

"I think we’ve got a quick race car; we’ll see what Sunday throws at us."

Van Gisbergen lamented a mistimed run; he was stop the time sheets in the final stanza, but ended up seventh.

"We were looking pretty good in the qualifying session, but then we got a bit out of sync," the champion-elect said.

"We timed our run too early, and unfortunately, we had a bad run.

"The last run I did wasn’t too much of an improvement as well, which is a shame."

Supercars will return to the track on Saturday for Practice 5 at 10:15am AEDT. Click here to view the track schedule.

Every session of the event will be broadcast live on Foxtel (Fox Sports 503) and streamed on Kayo.
