Jamie Whincup has been penalised five grid positions for his tussle with Scott McLaughlin in Race One of the MSS Security Challenge.

The Stewards’ Report states he failed to leave sufficient racing room to Car #33 Scott McLaughlin on the main straight. The two were fighting for second position in the 10-lap race.

The battle reinvigorates the heated finish at the Clipsal 500 Adelaide, when the Red Bull Commodore and Valvoline Volvo went head to head on the final lap, McLaughlin finishing just ahead of his competitor.

The #1 will start from seventh on the grid, behind teammate Craig Lowndes and ahead of Nissan’s James Moffat.

Shane van Gisbergen won the first race ahead of Whincup by six seconds.

Stay tuned for Race Two beginning 2.25pm local time.
