Holden pair Jamie Whincup and Jason Bright have claimed pole position for the two races on Sunday at the V8 Supercars round in Auckland.

Whincup was fastest in opening qualifying and will start on the front of the grid with Ford's Mark Winterbottom for race eight of the championship at Pukekohe Raceway.

The 30-year-old, who was victorious in race seven on Saturday to maintain his lead in the series standings, clocked a lap time of 1min 2.70sec to bag the 41st pole position of his career.

Fabian Coulthard and James Courtney will start on the second row of the grid.

In qualifying for race nine, Bright logged 1min 2.65sec to outpace Whincup and Coulthard.

Winterbottom was the fastest Ford driver and will start from sixth position while his teammate Will Davison was three spots down the timesheets.

Record-setting New Zealander Scott McLaughlin was seventh quickest in both qualifying sessions as he looks to replicate his stunning win in front of home fans on Saturday.

The 19-year-old McLaughlin made V8 Supercars history when he became the youngest winner with victory in the opening race of the round.

The first of two 100km races on Sunday starts at 1.10pm local time (11.10am AEST).
