Six-time and defending V8 Supercars Champion Jamie Whincup has won his first race since March, holding off Fabian Coulthard in a chaotic second race at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Brilliant starts boosted both Whincup and Coulthard, who swarmed pole man and first race winner Chaz Mostert into the fast turn one.

The Holdens turned the tide and led the way but there was plenty of action in the packbehind him with Scott Pye turned around.

Save of the day went to Jason Bright, who was wildly crossed up at turn eight after an incident involving Rick Kelly and Garth Tander. Incredibly he kept control of his Team BOC Commodore, not allowing it back on the road and into oncoming traffic.

But helater suffered a blown front right tyre that saw him fly into turn one and pull up the car at the tyre barriers.

Todd Kelly was wedged between two cars in the chaos and headed straight to the garage suffering from a bent steering arm.

Both Bright and Kelly went back out to finish the race.

While there were questions over Whincup's Commodore while he was out leading, he ultimately held off Coulthard for a 0.62sec victory in the closely fought race. It was first win since race six in Tasmania.

"It has been a while [since my last win] and she sounded like a bit of a tractor out there, but not too much power loss," Whincup said.

"Fabs is always quick on soft tyres. Good battle, good to be on the top step of the podium."

Coulthard was back in the pack at the last round, but is pleased to have fired back in today's second race.

"It's pretty good to come from where we came from, we had a tough round at QR but to bounce back the way we have ... the boys have put in long hours and that's the way we repay them," he said.

Mostert was home in third, managing to keep Shane van Gisbergen at bay.

Mostert's result lifts him to second in the Championship, moving ahead of Craig Lowndes by nine points.

"Wow, fantastic!" the Pepsi Max driver said, learning of the Championship change.

"I didn't quite get a good start then but it's quite tricky here, this is one of the hardest tracks to start on ...two poles, two podiums, can't be happier."

Championship leader Mark Winterbottom finished eighth, with Lowndes 10th.
