Chaz Mostert says there are "definitely talks" about sampling the Gen3 Ford Mustang soon.

Walkinshaw Andretti United will race Mustangs from 2023.

It will return Mostert to the Blue Oval, while Nick Percat has never raced a Ford in Supercars.

Neither Mostert or Percat have tested either Gen3 prototype.

Now that WAU will race Fords from next year, it has cleared the path for the drivers to sample the Mustang.

WAU Team Principal Bruce Stewart told Supercars.com in Townsville: "We want to get them in soon".

It was a point reiterated by Mostert, although he didn’t put a date on the maiden laps.

The Mustang will be driven by Zane Goddard in Townsville this weekend.

The Gen3 cars will be taken to more events before the season is out.

"It is pretty big news around what we’re racing next year," Mostert said.

"The Gen3 stuff, the focus will be on what the team wants us to do.

"There’s definitely talks going around when we’ll get in it soon. I can’t say when that will be."

Mostert reiterated that the immediate focus is doing the Holden fanbase proud in the final rounds of 2022.

WAU has raced Commodores since the Holden Racing Team's inception in 1990.

The team famously won last year’s Repco Bathurst 1000 with Mostert and Lee Holdsworth.

Should a Ford win in October, Mostert and WAU will have taken the Commodore’s 28th and final Bathurst win.

Mostert is also the most recent winner in Supercars, having won the last start Race 18 in Darwin.

The two-time Bathurst winner has now won the Commodore’s final races in Sydney, Albert Park and Darwin.

This weekend, he wants to do the same in Townsville.

"It’s also important that we finish off a great relationship that has history with our team," Mostert said.

"Last race in a Commodore around here, I’m sure all the Commodore guys want to get the last win."

The Gen3 cars will turn laps on all three days of next weekend’s NTI Townsville 500.
