Cam Waters has converted his early season Supercars form into speedway results, with the Tickford Racing driver finishing second in Saturday night’s main event in Warrnambool.

Waters opened his 2023 Supercars campaign with victory at the Thrifty Newcastle 500, despite crossing the line third in Race 1.

The Tickford star led the championship after both Red Bull Ampol Camaro were disqualified.

A week on from Newcastle, Waters returned to his Chief Racing machine in rural Victoria.

It comes after Brodie Kostecki and Shane van Gisbergen made successful speedway starts prior to Newcastle.

Led by Dave McFadden, Waters scored his best 410 result to date with second in the A-Main.

Waters was in the first group to qualify, and achieved the Quick Time as the fastest in his group.

The reverse grid format saw Waters relegated to the back row of the starting grid for his heat.

However, he bolted to third in the opening laps and made a pass for second two laps from home to complete a top-two finish.

Waters earned passage into one of the shootouts to determine the front eight positions of the A-Main.

There, he secured a front row start for the A-Main, and led Brock Hallet early on in the feature race.

Hallet took back the lead after a yellow flag — Waters fought hard, but ultimately came home second.

Regardless, it was Waters’ best A-Main result to date, and another trophy for Chief Racing, which turns its attention to Avalon next week.

"Great to be back in a sprintcar! Had a great night here in Warrnambool,” Waters said.

"Time trialled quickest in my group, then ran from sixth to second in the heat. It put me straight into the gold shootout, which was really cool.

"Second-quickest in the shootout to start on the front row. Got a great start and led for a few laps. Ran a little bit high for that point in the race and got passed.

"Held my own for second in the race. The car was great! Can't thank all the crew and sponsors enough, but also to Dave for subbing in as crew chief.

"Had a lot of fun tonight, bring on Avalon.”

Waters is third in the Supercars standings heading to the Beaurepaires Melbourne SuperSprint on March 30-April 2.
