Cam Waters is determined to put aside questions of coming second with a maiden Bathurst victory.

Waters is staring down the barrel of unwanted Bathurst history.

Should he finish second on Sunday, he will become the first driver to finish second three times in a row.

Waters started on pole in 2020 and had Will Davison in his corner.

However, he was defeated by Shane van Gisbergen in an enthralling sprint.

Last year, Waters crossed the line second, helping Moffat to his own second runners-up finish.

Waters and Moffat set the groundwork in a strong Winton test nearly two weeks ago.

Remarkably, Waters has the same co-driver for a second straight year for the first time since his 2011 debut.

P2 last year for Waters and Moffat

Now, the only thing remaining is a race-winning effort on Sunday.

"It’s awesome having Moff on board again, he’s a jet there,” Waters said.

“Obviously we came second together last year, and we know each other and the car really well.

"We don’t have to think too much about how we work together or anything like that.

“We can just hop in and go racing, so we’re all set to head up there and give it a red hot crack.

"To be honest I’m a bit sick of being asked about coming second.

“The best way to stop being asked about it is to go win the thing, so that’s what we’ll try to do.”

Waters has won three races this season, and has scored 10 additional podiums.

SVG and Waters' incredible Pukekohe duel

Of those 10 podiums, eight times has Waters been beaten to the win by van Gisbergen.

If van Gisbergen outscores Waters by 75 points on Sunday, the title is his.

Bathurst follows a thrilling Pukekohe round, where van Gisbergen overhauled Waters in a classic.

However, while stung by recent defeats, Waters is confident considering his momentum.

“We had a pretty good round in New Zealand coming second for the weekend,” he said.

"We probably should have come home with a race win or two.

“We’re heading into Bathurst with some momentum, and obviously we’re going there to win."

Cars will hit the track at Mount Panorama for Practice 1 on Thursday.

Tickets for the Repco Bathurst 1000 are available on Supercars.com and Ticketek.
