Waters finds sand in battle with Mostert

Cam Waters was left frustrated by an error while chasing Chaz Mostert for the Race 26 podium.

Waters failed to score a trophy at an event for the first time since April’s Albert Park round.

He loomed to pull off a podium in Sunday’s Sandown finale as he hounded Mostert.

After a number of lunges at Turn 1, it was an off at Turn 9 that ended his charge.

Waters dropped to 10th, dropping 38 points to championship leader Shane van Gisbergen.

Broc Feeney would later overhaul Mostert for the final spot on the podium.

Van Gisbergen is now 500 points ahead of Waters, who retained second overall.

"Race two of [Sunday] was looking better, the car felt a bit better, strategy was good,” he said.

"I was chasing Chaz down for third and just locked it up into Dandenong Road and went off.

"Fortunately I managed to keep it going and got back on track and got home 10th.

“Obviously it’s a pretty frustrating way to end the weekend.

"We’ll bounce back for Puke in a few weeks and have a red hot crack.”

Best passes from the Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint

It came after Waters slumped to seventh in Sunday’s first race, having started second.

A poor start saw Waters shuffled to fourth, before he dropped more ground battling David Reynolds and Will Brown.

A day earlier, Waters was denied a podium shot after being caught up in a battle with Brown.

“Not a great one to be honest,” he said of Sunday as a whole.

"In the first race today I didn’t get a great start, so I got pushed back to fourth.

“Then had a bad lap where I got run off the track by Reynolds and then hit in the side by Will Brown and dropped a couple spots."
