Cam Waters’ return to speedway action had a dramatic twist at Warrnambool on Saturday night.

The Tickford Racing driver is again taking on dirt tracks around Victoria in the Supercars off-season.

Waters was accompanied by Tickford teammate Thomas Randle for the weekend’s action.

However, Waters’ night took a turn for the worst when he suffered his biggest speedway crash to date.

Waters hit a rut, spun out and crashed in the A-Main.

The Chief Racing chassis suffered major rear-end damage, bringing Waters’ night to a premature end.

Earlier, Waters placed ninth in the field of 51 cars and only three tenths off top spot.

He qualified on the front row in the second heat of the evening, and finished the eight-lapper in first.

Waters qualified for the A-Main Dash, which determined the starting places for the first eight cars in the A-Main.

The starting positions for the Dash were drawn at random; Waters drew seventh, and finished sixth.

He had pace off the line, but the crash brought a jarring end to his night just two laps in.

Jock Goodyer won Max’s Race ahead of Australian World of Outlaws star James McFadden and Ryan Newton.

"Had a lot of fun tonight being back in the car,” said Waters, who finished second in the 2022 Supercars season.

"The crew built me a new car and it looks amazing in its new colours.

"Hot laps went pretty well, the same as Time Trials.

"We were eight for our group which put us on the front row of our heat and managed to convert that into a win which was awesome.

"The track was super fast and really rough. I just hit a rut and put it in the wall; so that was our night done.

"Bit disappointing, but a lot of cars hit it in the rough, so I wasn't alone.

"A massive thanks to all the crew and our sponsors for everything."

The 2023 Repco Supercars Championship will commence in Newcastle next March.

Tickets are on sale on Supercars.com and Ticketek.com.
