Scott McLaughlin has taken the top spot for this afternoon's 300km dash at the Castrol Gold Coast 600.

The Kiwi racer, who started on the front row yesterday, went one better in the 20-minute session today with a 1min10.7628sec lap at the Surfers street circuit.

"We're pumped," McLaughlin said.

"It's a good thing, I know how tough it is - Shane's fast, Whincup is fast, so we'll see what we've got."

McLaughlin and co-driver Alex Premat endured a tough day yesterday, suffering froma steering issue after Premat broke the front splitter of the Volvo S60 in his opening stint.

Alongside the #33 on the front row will be Craig Lowndes' #888 Commodore, the Bathurst winner pulling up 0.0998sec short of the quick Kiwi.

"Track position around this place is all important," Lowndes said on FOX SPORTS.

"We saw yesterday we had a faster car than Reynolds, we just couldn't capitalise on it, so track position is all important."

Yesterday's race winners Shane van Gisbergen/Jonathon Webb start on the second row with Jamie Whincup/Paul Dumbrell in fourth position.

Mark Winterbottom and his Prodrive team will be looking for redemption after yesterday's pit lane mishap - he and Steve Owen start fifth alongside Scott Pye and Marcos Ambrose.
