The top four, who combine for 19 of the season’s 20 wins, were covered by just 0.15s.

Six different teams occupied the top seven positions in the 30-minute session.

Thomas Randle was fifth ahead of Brodie Kostecki and Mark Winterbottom.

Team 18 veteran Winterbottom is making his 258th round start.

Kostecki set the early running on a 1:49.059s ahead of van Gisbergen, Waters and De Pasquale.

Waters wiped over 0.5s off Kostecki’s time, with Will Davison slotting into second.

Van Gisbergen chased time, and a set-up change helped the points leader fire to top spot on a 1:48.260s.

The defending champion’s time held firm for the remainder of the session.

However, De Pasquale proved just 0.1s slower, despite losing over 0.3s in the middle sector.

Waters, who has won three races this season, beat Mostert to third.

Broc Feeney, who topped the earlier session, was eighth ahead of wildcard Zak Best.

Best impressed once again, the Tickford Racing wildcard finishing Practice 1 in third.

Davison wound up 10th ahead of Nick Percat, Lee Holdsworth and Andre Heimgartner.

Jack Le Brocq again brought up the rear of the 27-car grid.

Cars will return to the track for three-part ARMOR ALL Qualifying at 1:30pm local time.

Since 2018, 11 of 13 races in Tailem Bend have been won from the front row.

Mustangs have won 10 of the last 11 races, and taken 11 of the last 10 poles.
