The Red Bull Holden Racing Team driver had been living in New Zealand since shortly after the Beaurepaires Melbourne 400 – but with the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship resuming this month, needed to fly back across the Tasman imminently.

The 31-year-old made the trip on Friday and is currently in the process of completing a 14-day self-isolation period.

Red Bull Holden made the following statement: “Shane will serve a mandatory 14-day quarantine period at his personal residence after returning to Australia from New Zealand under strict conditions directed by the Queensland Government and State Health Department.

“Shane’s home-based self-isolation will allow him to continue competing in the Supercars All Stars Eseries, as well as maintain his fitness routine in preparation for the commencement of the Supercars season on June 27 at Sydney Motorsport Park.

“We thank Queensland’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young, the Queensland Health Department and Supercars for their assistance in the matter.”

Of the ordeal to get back to his Gold Coast home, van Gisbergen told Supercars.com: “It was pretty full on and intense, like luckily I had been quarantining myself anyway in New Zealand so it made it easy from that side.

“And then just coming over and taking the right steps and keeping sanitised and keeping the distance and wearing a mask, all that kind of stuff. It was pretty full on.”

Fitness and simulator racing shape as prime ways for van Gisbergen to pass time before he can return to normal life.

“I’ve got a little gym at home. I’ll just keep myself busy and still keep active, I can’t go running around so I’ll be busy in the garage here,” he said.

“But otherwise it’s two weeks by myself.

“It’s going to be a long two weeks but it is what it is and I’m just lucky I can do it at home and keep doing the Eseries and keep myself active so I’m ready to go when we go back racing.”

Van Gisbergen’s return from New Zealand has not dented his online racing form, winning the opening round of the World RX Esports Invitational Eseries.

The 2016 champion leads the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries by 146 points from Shell V-Power Racing’s Scott McLaughlin.
