Three-time Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen has been inducted to MotorSport Wall of Fame
Reigning Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen has been inducted into New Zealand’s MotorSport Wall of Fame.
Van Gisbergen, 34, was honoured at the annual MotorSport New Zealand Awards Evening last weekend.
The MotorSport Wall of Fame, established in 1994, honours the achievements of past and present Kiwi motorsport figures.
Inductees to the MotorSport Wall of Fame are not an annual occurrence, adding weight to van Gisbergen’s honour.
The two-time Bathurst winner won his third championship in 2022, off the back of a record-breaking 21-win season.
He joins Scott McLaughlin, Greg Murphy, Craig Baird, Paul Radisich and Jim Richards on the MotorSport Wall of Fame.
Van Gisbergen had a mixed weekend in Tasmania, with results of third, DNF and fourth across the three races.
The Aucklander was unable to accept the honour in person as he was competing at the NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint.
The Wall of Fame honour also recognises van Gisbergen’s diversity, given he has also been successful in other categories.
Notably, van Gisbergen won the 66th New Zealand Grand Prix from the pit lane in 2021.
Last year, he scored podium finish on his debut World Rally Championship debut in the WRC2 class.
Bathurst-title double in 2022
It comes after van Gisbergen was nominated in the 'Sportsman of the Year' category at the prestigious Halberg Awards.
Wayne Christie, President of MotorSport New Zealand, paid tribute to the 78-time Supercars race winner.
“New Zealand has such a proud and rich 75-plus year history in motorsport and Shane is one of the best the world has ever seen,” said
“Shane’s immense talent seems to know no bounds. He’s immediately quick in everything he drives.
"I’m looking forward to him continuing to take on new challenges throughout the remainder of what is already an amazing career."
Van Gisbergen is fourth in the Supercars drivers’ standings heading to the betr Darwin Triple Crown on June 16-18.
