Van Gisbergen bungles lap, fails to reach Shootout

Shane van Gisbergen is rueing his approach to Friday Adelaide qualifying, with the champion-elect qualifying 25th and last.

Van Gisbergen left his flyer until the closing minutes, and was up relative to the field.

As he approached the final corner, van Gisbergen crossed up and ran long into the grass.

With just over a minute remaining, van Gisbergen could do little but coast home.

The Red Bull Ampol Racing driver couldn’t improve, and will start from the back for Saturday’s race.

It marks his worst Adelaide qualifying result since 2011, when he qualified 23rd.

“My qualifying run was just littered with mistakes,” he said.

"The car was very hard to drive, and I was probably pushing a bit too hard and didn’t back it down enough.

"I probably should have accepted to try and get into the shootout rather than go all out.

"I’m pretty pissed off with myself right now.”

It was a far cry to Friday morning, when he broke the practice lap record to top Practice 2.

Van Gisbergen reiterated that his car was tough to drive, and admitted he is in for a tough Saturday.

"The car obviously wasn’t that great and was impossible to drive on the limit,” he said.

“We’ll have a catch up with the engineering group tonight and hopefully make some changes before tomorrow’s final practice run.

"Tomorrow’s race is going to be tough, but we’ll try and get things right for Sunday.”

Cars will hit the track on Saturday for Practice 3 at 11:00am local time, followed by the ARMOR ALL Top Ten Shootout at 12:35pm.

The first 78-lap race, Race 33 of the 2022 season, will commence at 3:15pm.
