V8 Supercars is gunning for one million Facebook fans after passing the halfway mark this week.
Atthe signature Castrol Townsville 500 - Driven by TAFE Queensland, V8 Supercars has registered half a million followers in the five years since its Facebook presence was first established.
Significantly, the page has grown by 200,000 fans since the introduction of the new generation V8 Supercar at the start of 2013, a 62 per cent growth.
While the vast majority of our followers are from Australia, V8 Supercars has significant and growing global following as well. From New Zealand, the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Mexico ... even Iceland.
"We are a proud national sport that is admired globally," V8 Supercars CEO James Warburton said.
"Our racing is as thrilling and entertaining as any category in the world, and it is great to be acknowledged for that both locally and internationally. It is fantastic to hit the 500,000 mark, but we are focused now on getting to one million followers."
To illustrate the magnitude of the milestone if each Facebook fan took just two steps as part of a relay at the famous Mount Panorama, together they would easily complete the 161 laps and 1000kms, the same distance the race cars need to conquer to win.
Or, if they each drove a V8 Supercar using one tank of United Petroleum fuel, they would circumnavigate the globe 3,100 times.
This milestone reinforces V8 Supercars position amongst Australia's greatest sporting codes and cements the international reputation of the Championship.
