Cam Waters encountered a rocky yet rewarding comeback to speedway action ahead of Sandown.

The Tickford Racing driver returned to Sprint Car competition over the weekend in Darwin.

Waters last raced a Sprint Car in the summer before he commenced his 2022 Supercars campaign.

The 28-year-old lacked overall pace on the opening night despite drawing third for the first heat.

He finished fifth, before dropping from seventh to eighth in the second heat.

Waters started fourth for the B-Main, and finished sixth.

Chief Racing stripped the car overnight and dissected what went wrong.

It paid dividends, Waters a far more competitive force.

Contact in the opening heat sent Waters to the rear of the grid, and he raced to sixth.

Waters bolted from seventh to fourth in the second heat, and he qualified for the A-Main.

Early contact again saw Waters dropped back, with the Mildura product fighting back to eighth.

Chief Racing will return to Victoria in preparation for the second week of Chariots of Thunder and the Alice Springs debut.

That will come the week after this weekend’s Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint.

Waters praised his team for the overnight fix, and cast his gaze to the Alice Springs swing.

"The crew did an awesome job getting the car sorted after the troubles from night one,” he said.

"I felt a bit more comfortable too. We had an okay run through the heats.

"Started to move forward in the A[-Main] but got put rear after I was deemed the cause of the yellow.

"Managed to work my way back to eighth with a speedy car.

"A massive thank you to the crew and our sponsors.

"Excited to get back up there for week two of Chariots of Thunder.”

Waters will arrive at Sandown 393 points behind Shane van Gisbergen.

Cars will hit the track at Sandown on Friday. Purchase your tickets now.
