Triple Eight test a dream for star Super2 rookie

Standout Dunlop Super2 Series rookie Will Brown says his upcoming driver evaluation day test with Triple Eight marks one of the biggest opportunities of his career.

The 19-year-old will join Eggleston Super2 team-mate Nathan Morcom and rival Kurt Kostecki at Queensland Raceway on Friday as they test team-mate Paul Dumbrell’s Commodore in main series specification.

The day will be run by Triple Eight, with Jamie Whincup and his engineers David Cauchi and Romy Mayer, as well as team manager Mark Dutton, all scheduled to attend.

Brown has impressed in his rookie Super2 campaign, finishing on the podium once and sitting eighth in the points standings despite a crash in the most recent round in Townsville.

“It’ll be fantastic and not many people get this chance. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and I can’t thank Triple Eight enough," Brown told Supercars.com of the test.

“I’m really looking forward to taking away as much as we can and learning what’s the difference between the Super2 team and main series teams and what we can do better.

“We run Triple Eight cars, so they take an interest. Roland (Dane, Triple Eight owner) has a look at us and checks in how we’re going.

“I don’t think you get a bigger opportunity than to run with Triple Eight.”

Brown added working with Dumbrell has aided his transition to Supercars after winning both the Formula 4 and Toyota 86 Racing Series last year, as well as racing Formula Ford.

The youngster hopes to compete in this year’s non-championship Super2 event at Bathurst before seeking a co-drive in next year's Pirtek Enduro Cup.

“One of the biggest things about Eggleston is running great cars, but having Paul Dumbrell there as a mentor – you don’t get much better than that,” he said.

Brown shone on debut in Adelaide

“He’s running with Jamie (Whincup in the Pirtek Enduro Cup) and he gives us a lot of feedback.

“He’s a nice guy and anything we ask he’s happy to help and teaches us things we want to know.

“This year was always planned to do Bathurst (Super2 race). We’re running short on budget so we’re working to get enough sponsorship to race that round.

“But the plan is to race all the rounds this year and next year to try secure a co-drive as well and possibly do a wildcard."

The Toowoomba-product has impressed this season with how quickly he has adapted to the Supercar, which he puts down to racing in a number of different series last year.

The success across championships also makes Brown immediately eligible for the CAMS Superlicence required to race in Supercars' top tier.

“I think adapting to it quickly is helped by running three categories last year. I think I counted 22 rounds I did last year.” Brown said.

“Every weekend you jump in something different. Running a paddleshift and then a H-pattern, jmping between them on the same weekend... I had to adapt. It was quicker to adapt to the Supercar, but I’m still learning.

“I went into Formula Ford and Formula 4 was where my friends were going and it was a good grounding. But Supercars is what I always wanted to do. That’s what I’m aiming for now definitely.

“I think you need 13 (Superlicence) points and I might have something near 25 so that’s worked out well. But I’ll do what I have to this year and hopefully we can secure an enduro drive next year.”
