Third-generation Johnson wins national title

Third-generation racer Jett Johnson, with family watching on, continued on his path to Supercars with a maiden national title win.

Johnson, 17, sealed the 2022 TA2 Muscle Car Series crown at Winton Motor Raceway on Sunday.

The teenager became champion-elect on Saturday, and won the title outright after finishing fourth in Sunday's finale.

Johnson took out the title with grandfather Dick and father Steven watching on.

Supercars Hall of Famer Dick won five ATCC drivers’ championships between 1981 and 1989.

The famous Queenslander also won the Bathurst 1000 three times — in 1981, 1989 and 1994.

Dick’s son Steven also enjoyed a long Supercars career, notably winning three races.

Steven also finished on the 2007 Bathurst podium in a Falcon brandishing his father’s famous #17.

Jett has ambitions to reach Supercars, and would become the third Johnson to do so.

The teen lapped a Shell V-Power Racing Team Mustang at Queensland Raceway in June.

Jett took to QR — with its pit straight named after his grandfather — for an evaluation day.

The three Johnsons also lapped identical Shell V-Power Mustangs — complete with the #17 — at the Ipswich circuit.

Jett has committed to a National Trans Am Series campaign in 2023.

However, a Super2 or Super3 programme could also present itself next year.

"I want nothing more than to try to continue what both dad and grandad have done,” Jett said in June.

"I know I have got to put the work in to get there.

"I have got to put in 110 per cent and try to stand out more than anybody else.

"I’m going to do what it takes to get to Supercars.”

The 2022 Repco Supercars Championship will conclude on the Adelaide streets on December 1-4.
