Chaz Mostert has been a feature of Supercars for a decade, and put in his finest career performance in Bathurst last year.

Mostert won the Repco Bathurst 1000 the day after recording the fastest ever Supercars lap of Mount Panorama.

The Walkinshaw Andretti United driver finished a career-best third overall, and is tipped for bigger things in 2022.

Going off his Bathurst performance alone, it’s arguable that Mostert has yet to reach his peak - and in April, he will turn 30 years of age.

If Mostert continue his exponential rise, he wouldn’t be the first driver to reach lofty heights in his 30th year.

Mostert, who turns 30 on April 10, recorded his best career championship finish in his eighth full season.

He won’t be the only 2022 contracted driver to turn 30 this year; Garry Jacobson turns 30 on February 28, and Jack Le Brocq on July 7.

Drivers who hit the top after turning 30

There are parallels with Mostert and Mark Skaife, none more so than they are driving for the same team.

Hall of Famer Skaife recorded a staggering 69 of his 90 career wins after he turned 30, including three straight titles between 2000 and 2002.

Skaife turned 30 in 1997, and was already a two-time champion (1992 and 1994). However, his best was yet to come.

Skaife spearheaded the Holden Racing Team’s early success of the 21st century.

Jamie Whincup won 60 of his 124 career races, and three of seven titles, after he turned 30 in February 2013.

Behind him is Craig Lowndes, who burst onto the scene as a 21-year-old rookie in 1996.

Lowndes achieved the bulk of his success as a 20-something, but scored six of his seven Bathurst 1000 victories after turning 32.

Peter Brock won 40 of his 48 races after turning 30, and Garth Tander 38 of 56.

Tander turned 30 during his successful 2007 campaign, and won 12 of 15 races that year after his birthday.

Several drivers were late bloomers, some taking all career wins after turning 30.

Whincup only grew his legacy after turning 30

Notably, Allan Moffat (36 wins), John Bowe (31), Dick Johnson (30), Russell Ingall (27) and Jim Richards (23) all hit the top after turning 30.

Moffat, Bowe, Johnson, Ingall and Richards combine for 15 drivers’ championships. Not bad for elder statesmen!

What about 40?

Two-time Bathurst winner and Shell V-Power Racing Team driver Will Davison will turn 40 in August.

There will be four rounds held after Davison’s birthday in 2022, giving him a chance to join an even more exclusive crew.

Bowe scored 20 wins after turning 40, with Johnson winning 18, Brock 14, Lowndes 13 and Richards 11.

Richards also won the 1990 and 1991 titles, having turned 40 in 1987.

Skaife won eight races after turning 40, and retired from Supercars racing altogether in 2011.

Bowe still races today in Touring Car Masters, with Lowndes eyeing a 29th straight start in the Great Race.

Ingall, who made a wildcard start in Bathurst last year, was 41 years old when he secured his first and only drivers’ title in 2005.

Mostert will commence his 2022 Repco Supercars Championship campaign in Newcastle in March. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
