The 'quiet assassin' behind Feeney's wins

Broc Feeney has labelled engineer Martin Short as the "quiet assassin" behind his early-career main game breakthroughs.

Feeney has won two races in 2023, and three of the last 10 dating back to last year’s season-ending VALO Adelaide 500.

In Feeney’s corner has been engineer Short, who also helped the Queenslander to his 2021 Dunlop Super2 Series title.

Feeney, who debuted in 2022 and is still aged just 20, recently dominated the Bosch Power Tools Perth SuperSprint finale last weekend from pole.

The #88 Red Bull Ampol Camaro was untouchable, with Feeney leading all 42 laps before taking the chequered flag by over six seconds.

Critically, the new Gen3 cars are less adjustable than their predecessors, but Feeney and Short have been quick to make it work with wins in Melbourne and Perth.

Speaking after his Race 9, Feeney praised Short, with the youngster just one of three drivers to have multiple wins this season.

“We’re great,” Feeney said.

“It’s like the quiet assassin, Marty.

"He doesn’t say a whole lot, but he says what he needs to at the right time, and he’s been great.

“It makes such a difference, having a good car underneath you, especially with these things that have got no tuning ability in the car.

“What they send you with is what you’ve got, and they did such a great job.

“We’ve been on the back foot, everyone’s been up and down so much… they certainly got that right today — super grateful to those guys.”

Feeney and Short, like others, have also battled — the #88 Chevrolet was 10th in Race 7 from 11th on the grid, before Feeney raced from 21st to 13th in Race 8.

Heading to the NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint, Feeney is 220 points behind championship leader, Erebus Motorsport’s Brodie Kostecki.

Feeney remained adamant he can win the 2023 championship, but admitted there is one area he needs to improve in should he get there.

"I do believe that myself, we have a shot,” he said.

"The biggest thing is being consistent, because the Erebus boys have been."

Feeney will travel to Thailand on May 12-14 to race Triple Eight’s entry in the GT World Challenge Asia event at the Buriram International Circuit.

The 2023 Repco Supercars Championship will resume at the NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint on May 19-21.
