Adam De Borre says a focus on car pace heading to Sydney laid the groundwork for Chaz Mostert and Lee Holdsworth’s historic Bathurst win.

Mostert and Holdsworth combined to win Sunday’s Repco Bathurst 1000 for Walkinshaw Andretti United.

It was Mostert’s second Bathurst win, Holdsworth’s first in 18 attempts, and WAU’s first since it won as the Holden Racing Team in 2011.

Race engineer De Borre, who has been Mostert’s right-hand man for the balance of the driver’s Supercars career, was a key man behind Sunday’s result.

De Borre and the team arrived at the Sydney quadruple-header with an eye on making the #25 Mobil 1 Appliances Online Commodore the “best” car.

Results didn’t immediately follow in Sydney - with Mostert’s sensational Race 25 charge an exception - but the tables turned in Bathurst.

The Mostert/Holdsworth car was in the top three in every session, scored pole with a record lap, and led over 100 laps in the race.

For De Borre, it was proof of the hard work which began before cars returned in Sydney in late October.

“It’s been hard work the last few weeks,” De Borre said.

“We went to SMP with a mindset of we wanted to make our car the best car.

"We brought all the lessons we learnt into this weekend, and we got what we did.

“Fingers crossed we can keep it going next year.”

De Borre was alongside Mostert when he won the 2014 Great Race at Ford Performance Racing, and followed him to WAU in 2020.

They finally returned to the winners’ circle in Tasmania, before Mostert won at Hidden Valley.

The Bathurst result helped Mostert finish third overall, marking his best championship finish.

De Borre paid tribute to his driver, who was forced to defend from Shane van Gisbergen in a final stanza littered by Safety Cars.

“We won it in ’14, and it’s taken us a little while,” De Borre said.

“We’ve always been quick here but haven’t had the luck.

“I tell you what, those last 20 laps were pretty nerve wracking."

The 13-event 2022 Repco Supercars Championship will commence in Newcastle next year. Tickets for the event are on sale now.

The 13-round draft calendar was released on Sunday.
