Episode Six: The Dyno Run | Gen3 Unpacked

Both Gen3 engines have been run on the dynamometer to strong results, marking another key milestone in the Gen3 project.

As revealed in the latest Gen3 Unpacked instalment, the General Motors and Ford engines have both been run on the dynamometer at Cragsted Race Engines.

A dynamometer, or 'dyno' for short, is a device used for measuring force, torque or power of an engine.

The Gen3 engines were run in conditions akin to running in a Supercar, from identical exhausts, headers, water temperature and oil temperature.

From 2023, GM and Ford will compete with 5.7-litre and 5.4-litre engines respectively.

It marks a shift away from current cars, which are currently powered by 5.0-litre engines.

Both engines are of significantly different builds; the GM Gen3 engine is a single camshaft engine with two valves per cylinder.

Conversely, Ford’s Gen3 engine will have four camshafts with four valves per cylinder.

As revealed in the Gen3 Unpacked episode, the power and torque curves of both engines were almost identical - proof that the two units are approaching parity.

The results greatly impressed Gen3 Unpacked host Mark Larkham, who was with engine guru Craig Hasted during the latest dyno testing.

"I can honestly say I was impressed when I walked in here this morning," Larkham says.

"I'm way more impressed walking out this afternoon.

"What I've tried to show you here today through the work that Supercars and Craig... the work is good.

"The engines are close, the engines are going to race hard.

"We've got big. screaming, stonking V8s that we love, and that battle that started between Camaro and Mustang that started in the Australian Touring Car Championship way back in the '60s.

"That fight is going to go on into the future, and looking at what I've seen today, it's going to be closer than ever."

The 2021 Repco Supercars Championship will continue at next weekend’s Bunnings Trade Sydney SuperNight. Tickets for all four upcoming Sydney events are on sale now.

All sessions will be broadcast live on Fox Sports and streamed via Kayo. The Seven Network will broadcast live from 3:30pm AEDT on Saturday and 12:30pm AEDT on Sunday.
