This weekend's Repco Bathurst 1000 will offer a slice of history for some teams as they chase Great Race success.

In 60 Great Races held at Mount Panorama, 29 different numbers have won the race, 12 of them taken to multiple wins.

Two of the three most successful numbers in Bathurst history - #1 and #05 - will not be on the 2021 grid.

The #888 seemed destined for a year off, with Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes confirmed to race the #88 this weekend.

Whincup and Lowndes carried the #888 to three straight wins between 2006 and 2008, before Lowndes won with it three more times.

The Mountain is calling for an epic finale

However, it was confirmed Tuesday that Shane van Gisbergen and Garth Tander will attempt to defend their 2020 victory with the #888 on the window.

The #1 is also responsible for the most drivers' titles, and was taken to Bathurst victory for the first time in 1977 by Allan Moffat and Jacky Icxx.

Of the 25 numbers on the 2021 Bathurst grid, 13 have been raced to victory.

Two of the most successful active numbers belong to the Shell V-Power Racing Team - #11, and the team's iconic #11.

Larry Perkins famously won the Great Race three times with the #11, and ceremoniously handed it to Anton De Pasquale for this season.

Three of the 12 winless active numbers belong to Brad Jones Racing - Nick Percat's #8, Todd Hazelwood's #14 and Macauley Jones's #96.

Jack Smith's #4 was raced to victory by Jason Bright and Steven Richards for Stone Brothers Racing in 1998.

The #88 has never won Bathurst, although Steven Ellery and Adam Macrow scored Triple Eight's first Bathurst podium with the number in 2005.

Whincup and the late Jason Richards also finished on the same podium with the #3, which has also never won the race.

Tim Slade and Tim Blanchard will campaign the #3 on their CoolDrive Mustang this weekend.

Of active winless numbers, that leaves Mark Winterbottom's #18 and Scott Pye's #20 (both Team 18), Garry Jacobson's #22 (Team Sydney), David Reynolds's #26 (Kelly Grove Racing), Jake Kostecki's #34 and Zane Goddard's #35 (Matt Stone Racing), Brodie Kostecki's #99 (Erebus Motorsport) and the Triple Eight wildcard #39.

Will a new number be taken to victory lane come Sunday evening on December 5?
