Victory in Sydney edged Shane van Gisbergen closer to the win tallies of two greats, and an outright record of his own.

Race 1 victory at the Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight was van Gisbergen's 55th career win.

Fittingly, the win came in his 450th career race start.

Van Gisbergen employed a bold three-stop strategy to bring up win No.55, but slumped to sixth on Sunday after a torrid day.

On paper, the Race 1 win was a dominant one for van Gisbergen, but he had to work for it amid the "surprising" strategy.

It marked the first win for van Gisbergen with new race engineer Andrew Edwards.

"Even though the team has had a lot of changes over the break, we’re all working well," van Gisbergen said.

"Everyone’s doing their job and it’s a cool environment to be a part of.”

Just ahead on the all-time winners' list are Scott McLaughlin and Garth Tander, who are on 56 wins each.

McLaughlin (Tailem Bend) and Tander (Bathurst) last won in 2020. Van Gisbergen has since won 15 races.

Van Gisbergen could clear both should he win two or more races, something he can tick off as early as this month's return to Tasmania.

Tickets are on sale now for the upcoming NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint, which will be headlined by three races.

How does SVG get out?

McLaughlin, who recently claimed his first IndyCar win, is currently the most successful New Zealand Supercars driver with regards to race wins.

Van Gisbergen needs one win to match his tally, and two more to take the Kiwi record, as well as move fourth outright.

The two-time champion is now also three wins away from matching Tander's 56 wins in Holdens.

However, the 2022 the final season for the Commodore, the top three of Jamie Whincup, Craig Lowndes and Mark Skaife will be safe.
