Shane van Gisbergen says his bold strategy in the Pizza Hit Winton SuperSprint finale was a bid to “do something different”.

Van Gisbergen crossed the line just 0.4s behind Cam Waters in Sunday’s Race 15.

It came after the series leader took on three tyres at his stop in a bid to overhaul Waters.

Van Gisbergen chewed into a six-second margin in the closing laps, but fell just short.

He did, however, claim fastest lap bonus points.

Despite missing out on a second win of the day, van Gisbergen was pleased with his crew’s efforts.

"In the last race, we had to do something different,” he said.

"[Tickford] looked like they made a tweak to Cam’s car which made it better.

“We had to try something different by changing three tyres.

"The extra tyres gave us the fastest lap too, so it worked out well for us.”

It came after a fast stop paved the way to van Gisbergen’s Race 14 win.

An undercut and bold overtake ensured van Gisbergen has won a race at all five rounds this season.

"Our boys have been pushing so hard with pit stops and it’s paid dividends,” he said.

"All of the practice they’ve put in enabled us to put a lot of pressure on some of the other teams during the race.

"Because of that, we managed to get the undercut, and I pulled a pass, but it was set up because of the guys in the pits.”

Van Gisbergen will take an extended 281-point lead to Darwin.
